I'm looking to put a new system in my car. I've done a moderate amount of car stereo work, but this time I want a fine tuned system. I listen to literally all styles of music, and the sound I want is this: Crystal clear. No painful highs or lows. I want to feel the bass in my chest without it overpowering my ears. I want to hear the kick thud hard and feel the boom of sustained bass notes. I want violins to sound clear as day without screetching in my ear drums, but! I want to be able to play it loud! Basically the Kind of sound you hear in a quality theater. My plan is to put 6.5″ in the front, 6/9s in the back. What size sub should I get (in inches, watts, box etc.) What other recommendations do you’ve? also what is the best deal for quality vs. cost?

Answer:
For both quality and clarity look into a single high quality sub and a get 2 sets of components with crossovers and forget the 6×9's. Either get 2 sets of Focal/MB Quart 6.5's with the crossovers and a single 10″ Kicker L5 in the proper kicker box, and preferably a 5 channel amp like the newer JL Audio. The single amp system works great for sound quality as there are less chances for distortion. You might possibly think about getting a high quality 3 way external crossover to grant even finer tuning and gain levels than a amp by itself could give you. The 3-way gives independent front/rear frequency adjustment and gain and the sub output grants the adjustment of a bass boost/gain, and what Hz you want to be filtered.

Answer:
Focal Polyglass for components, Image Dynamics or ARC 12″ sub.
