i was watching ashes to ashes can i was wondering why does gene hunt drive an audi quattro
Answer:
My dad had an 85 Audi 5000S. The Quattro was a revolutionary car. Was the only one that was full time AWD with a viscous clutch and dominated the rally circuit. Few cars were 4WD rode like a truck and RWD or FWD handled like crap. Audi were smooth and people suffered from RWD withdrawals, the torque steering was aggravating on FWD cars. People in the 80s despited FWD since where not near to any Muscle cars and sucked on handling for too much under steering. They were gutless and really sucked badly. I lived on those days. People do not realized how well the cars are made now these days and how well they handle. Even the cheapest car, now these days is a better ride than a car from the 80s in any brand. Audi, was really cutting edge. The 5000S stile was copied on the Ford Taurus. It had a super light unibody. They used to have a pic of two girls lifting the body to prove how light it was. The sporty Audi GT was the rally winner and sold in the USA as a hatchback and the 4000s (80) and the 5000s (100) Quattro the family daily drivers. If my memory serves me well, it was a 40 Front / 60 Rear Torque Split. So back then, was a kick butt ride.
Was the 1st car maker to introduce a 5 cly Gasoline engine, a coefficient drag of .30 on a sedan, flush window sills cut wind noises, excellent crash test rates, electronic auto climate control, Blaupunkt stereo system. Stiles cues lives up to date with the roundness and the flush fitting of panels, windows and somewhat stiff but sporty handling steering wheel and suspension settings. The Media in USA, specially CBS destroyed the car calling it unsafe by saying the car took off on its own. NHTSA cleared that was driver errors and not a car issue. The problem was the brake pedal and the throttle were close for a quick reaction time on the Automatic Transmission. Inept people stepped on both when they applied the brake, therefore pushing on the throttle even harder. Audi recalled all the cars and placed the brake pedal more to the left and placed an electronic lock that held the transmission selector locked unless you apply the brake to shift. Other were just driver errors that drivers blamed Audi for their driving stupidity telling lies about the car took off on its own. But the negative publicity tarnished the brand for at least 15 years in the USA.
We all have to put all in perspective if you want to know the reason for things.
If I were in that time frame, had the money, I would bought one too and again ![]()
