you see on the second automobile, the headlights look a lot more nicer, which style came first?

What is the second automobile model called (the one with nice headlights) and what years were they in production?

How much money would it cost for one of these in good condition?

Answer:
I own a 2006 E46 3 series coupe (a 330ci) and it looks like the first one.

While the basic automobile remained unchanged, there were many changes to the detailing.

As to lights, there have been at least 5 different light configurations for the front end, not counting differences in the color of the signals, xenon vs. regular lights, etc.

Early ones looked like your second automobile. They had a flat top to the covers, with curved, scalloped bottoms to them. The sides sloped downward, not upward.

This was replaced by a version which had different curves at the bottom of the covers, but which were less downward sloping on the sides of the car. These were IMHO a tiny hideous.

The later 3 series sedans had something similar to the first photo, but simpler and IMHO less attractive.

I like the first pic config superior, it stands out and looks just right with the rest of the vehicle. It also is a heavily imitated design feature and once you get used to the design of these lights, you will see them imitated everywhere from Toyota 4runners to other would be sporty vehicles.

Early E46s had a crease on the sides that ran from the back all the way to the front lights. Later ones, after they were “refreshed” by BMW's new designer Chris Bangle, had a pointed character line, that stopped just behind the front wheel wells, then turned downward toward the ground. On some automobiles, the downward leg of this feature is even nonexistent so there’s just a shorter horizontal line, and perhaps that’s a third variation. (this side detailing is a feature that looks great, IMHO, and is the subject of a whole slew of bad, exagerrated imitations in current products - e.g., the new Ford Focus, Chrysler Sebring, etc.).

M3s are the exception, and kept the original light configuration throughout, and had the side grills on the fenders instead of the character lines discussed above.

Answer:
Like everyone else stated the first one is older. Both 325i series. The lights are xenon brand and were manufactured on all beamers from 00 and up. The newer one is and 05 and price range could be anywhere from 20,000-35,000 The older one is probably an 01 and can (if you can find a deal) be purchased for around 14,000 hope this helped good luck.
