Got to love GM and their warranty department. They make a 4 wheel drive vehicle and show it in the ads as a automobile that will go anywhere and tell the consumer how much superior their automobile is at offroading compared to the competition. They even have the ballz to compare the H3 to H1. Then, the instant you drive it offroad they say you’re abusing it. That's rich!
If they had their way you would never offroad your car until it was out of warranty.

Sounds like a clutch problem to me. Typical GM vehicles. I had a 2006 Chevy cobalt that had a tranny problem from day 1 and the dealer wouldn't even look at it, that was until the syncronizers went out and they were forced to look at it, and after a complete teardown they found that there were parts missing from the tranny, no wonder it wouldn't shift correctly. Even after the rebuild it was still screwed up, and on occasion I actually had to turn off the car in order to shift into 1st or reverse.
I would keep hounding the dealership to look at it seriously, because even off-roading there shouldn't be any heavy abuse on the clutch especially if all your doing is crawling over obstacles because you should be in 1st gear low range 4×4 and there shouldn't be any stress on the clutch. If its smoking that means its not engaging correctly.
Answer:
Raven first if your H3 is still under factory warranty, the dealer has to prove abuse. You will more than likley haved to be responsable for tear down, but if it is warranty it should be covered. It could be a clutch or hydrolic problem. If you feel that you didnt abuse it and arent trying to pull a fast one, call the factory (GM customer service) and ask for the factory rep that’s assigned to the dealer and have them begin a case on your truck. I’ve seen this happen 1 time in the 2 years I have worked for GM. It was a bad clutch plate. But I have seen a lot of worn out clutchs from abuse. Dont keep reving the engine and burning the clutch or you might endup paying for it.
