ok i have a 1979 gmc 1/2 ton i have a 12 bolt rear end that and a part-time np203 and a 350 but i have no clue what the front axle is. is it a d44 or d60 i have 6 lugs but i have seen many pople change 8 lugs to 6 to have more rims to select from. i also would like to know how to find out what gear ratio i have in my 4×4 can i find out by looking at the VIN number?? oh yea and i know that most 3/4 came with d44 but 8 lugs i want to make a front axle o a 8 lug if it a d44 since i have a 14 bolt full floating rear end just sitting around and will the front axle hold up with 44 boggers if its a d44? i apprieate your help a lot

yes look at vin number also get a LMC truck parts mag they’re free and will tell you a lot 1-800-lmc-truck

Are you sure that is a Dana at all? All the ones I have had have had a 14 bolt Eaton Spicer type, no Danas at all. You can look on the Summit web site and get a pretty good view of how to tell which rear end you’re dealing with by looking up gaskets for them or lockers or gears.
