i have a 2004 jeep grand cherokee 4×2, i want to make it 4×4. what parts would i have to get for it?
Answer:
The easiest thing to do would be…. sell it and buy an actual 4×4.
But, if you strongly wanted to keep this jeep (and have unlimited funds), you would have buy and swap in numerous big, heavy, costly parts, not to mention gain a ton of knowledge on the parts of your Jeep. First of all, you'd need a new overdrive section (the back half of the transmission). This makes it possible to bolt on the transfer case (something else you'd need). Following that, you would need to move the crossmember so that it can support the new transmission / transfer case combo. Then you would need an entire new front axle, complete with differential and all. After that, you'd need new driveshafts (front and rear). Finally, you'd have to buy a shifter and other random mechanical and electrical parts.
If you were confused just reading this, then I'd recommend selling your 2wd GC and buying a 4×4 GC. That'd be the smartest, cheapest way to get 4×4. It IS possible to do this conversion, and I’ve seen it done, but it was done by a skilled mechanic who's been working on Jeeps a lot.
Good Luck!

You can buy our '99 for the right price, and use all the above parts. Some need some repair as they’re starting to leak. Good luck. Book Mark it-> del.icio.us | Reddit | Slashdot | Digg | Facebook | Technorati | Google | StumbleUpon | Window Live | Tailrank | Furl | Netscape | Yahoo | BlinkList
