do they have problems?
are they generally reliable good vehicles?
are they costly to fix?
do they break a lot?
Answer:
I love my Miata's.
Both are 90 models, and have over 140000 miles on each.
If there is any problem with the Miata, it is the home mechanic. The second one I purchased suffered from a crankshaft problem, brought on by lack of attention to detail my who ever had the engine pulley off. It had over 100000 miles on it before the crankshaft failed.
Having owned about every brand of car out there (and often logging over 100000 miles in them), I can state the Miata has been one of the cheapest cars to maintain and keep on the road.
Now when something breaks, it is another story. This is because there is a lot of demand for any year Miata, so the parts can be on the high-priced side. The redeeming factor on this is that the engine is so common.
On the plus side is that there is a great after market support system. Not only for stock parts, but also racing parts. There are clubs that race them at some of the best road courses in the US.

i owned a miata for not that long at all, maybe 4 months, bought the car and starting tricking it out as a hobby. The automobile is physically easy and any person with common sense and basic learning ability can figure out the engine.
As for reliability the vehicle is great on gas because of its little engine, 1.6 liters is pretty small so problems that do accure, accure once in a great while depending on the year.
As for fixing the automobile, these automobiles are everywhere, i see them at junk yards constantly and parts are very common and very cheap to repair. The engine is small, there isn't a load of components to work on and with all the aftermarket parts for them more and more parts are being made because the car is so common which in the long run means there's allot of supply and not so much demand which equals cheap prices.
the only thing i noticed about miata's is the fact they’re very perilous cars because they’re very light, if your the type of person that is hungry to bury that needle and likes to go fast this automobile is potentially perilous to your life and others. If any kind of an accident occurs your ALWAYS going to be in the smaller crushed car not to mention the car comes stock with NO ROLL BAR which means if the car roles over your crushed and thats that.
besides the bad things the miata is a very dependable, trust worthy and definitely fun driving car.

I've driven a 1997 for the last 4 years, so I'll give you my opinion.
They’re great vehicles!
They’ve a few problems, but they are all predictable and well documented on Miata.net (along with the very helpful forums). The automobile is extremely easy to work on yourself, so any of the problems can be fixed for cheap.
I have never had a problem that has left me stranded in the past 60,000 miles (I'm currently at 140,000). It's mostly small annoying problems like a clutch slave cylinder or hydraulic lifter tick that you'll get. These problems are infrequent.
Of course, it all depends on the condition of the vehicle that you look at. I certainly wouldn't hesitate to purchase one.

I had one for several years, it never gave me any problems and was a great automobile. The last I checked, Consumer Reports rated it a “Best Buy.” I wish I still had mine!
