RX-8 is my dream automobile for now

I'm not buying new one

But i'm looking for one around 04

What are Pros and Cons about Mazda RX-8 ??

Is the gas mileage poor?

I'm looking for mileage around 80,000 ~ 100,000

will the high mileage have some problems??

Answer:
Jason,

I do not own a Mazda Rx8, but I have had somewhat of a curiosity and fascination about this car, because it is an exotic. Exotic vehicles will always have peculiar characteristics, the Mazda Rx8 is no exception. Despite it's size, this vehicle isn’t a gas sipping economy vehicle. One would think this could be the case because of Mazda's line of cars, whose emphasis is gas mileage, then performance. What makes it an exotic, is the power plant, a high reving, high stress rotary motor. I have heard this second hand, but the average life span for a rotary is 150,000 miles, before a major rebuild. Provided the oil is checked on a frequent basis, factory spec regular motor oil is routinely changed, and believe it or not, the automobile needs to be run very hard.

I think their is only one con. Mazda Service on the rotary engine is spotty, not each dealership has someone certified to work on this engine. Warranty work for many has been arguable. And, you can't take it anywhere else other than a Mazda dealer for certfied work that will not violate the warranty agreement. Once out of warranty, you’re even more on your own. This is the only con, that concerns me as a perspective buyer.

The upside is the car is reportedly fun and it is best as a second automobile, instead of a primary car. In order to have long stock service life, the engine needs to run hard, high revs extend engine life. This lessens the chance of the engine getting gummed up. You can drive it fast, but not go fast. Sounds contradictory, but a small high reving engine grants the driver to drive the vehicle at 7/10s of it's potential, on a daily basis. For example, one of the BMW 3 series has a dual turbo charged 6 cylinder engine. In order to run it at 7/10ths of it's potential, it needs to be opened up on the autobhan. The dimunitive 1.3 liter rotary can be opened up anywhere the speed limit is 65-75 mph, because of how it is geared and the small engine gets up to speed (revs) quicker despite less power that gets to the ground. The driver has a sporty feel in a nimble smooth sounding motor automobile. The car's potential is more accessible each day, it must be run hard to be properly taken care of and it will bring a smile to your face. Not because of 0-60 time, or because it is the most powerful on the road, simply because of it's capability to get down the road. The price of gas is the cost.

About 85% of RX8 owners know nothing about rotary engines and how to take care of them.

The RX-8 has a rotary engine. You will nedd the owners manual and study about the engines like how to maintain them.

For example, you must use premium gas, 5w-20 regular oil only(No synthetics or high mileage oil).

The automatic version is very slow. It is slower than most V6 cars and it isn’t as reliable as the Manual version, which is much faster, more reliable, and lighter and better on gas.

The gas mileage is still bad. 25mpg highway.

If you purchase one with 80,000-100,000, then i will have problems because the previous owners did not take care of them properly.

I would purchase one only if I buy it new.

Also, you must drive it each day. You can not leave it off for more than 30 hours or it might not start again and you will need to get it towed to Mazda so they have the ability to decompress the engine. Mechanics will not know how to work on this car so you can only take it to a Mazda Dealership.

Pros:

Fast

Fun to drive

Handles very well

Practical-lots of room in back seats. Enough for 6 foot person.

Con's:

RWD so it is very slippery in rain and impossible to drive in snow.

Hard to take care of properly.

Pro: Pretty cool looking sports car

Cons: Underpowered, heavy, rotary.

They look cool. But they dont have the power or fuel economy they should have, becasue of the weight.

Rotors arent long lived motors, as they’re required to rev pretty high to make any sort of power, and if you own a RX8 you’ll drive it hard.

If you want nice looks, or you’re prepared to spend some money on the motor to get decent sports car performance, its a good idea.. Otherwise, there are plenty of other cars that are the same price that’ll chew it up and get better economy.

Answer:
Pros-rotory engine

cons rotory engine

Its an alright engine but it needs to rev fairly high to get power(as in it takes time to get to those revs not that it would be all that bad for it)

All high milage vehicles are iffy, and those rotory engines wont get more than 25 highway and a lot less city.

Answer:
Pros - back seat, rotary engine, semi fast, decent looking

Cons - back seat is useless, rotary engine, not as fast as an RX-7, not as good looking as an RX-7.

The first thing you should ask the owner is if it burns out. If they say no, walk away as they have killed the engine. Sounds weird, but Rotary Engines are designed to burn a small amount of oil, to lubricate the apex seals.

Second, no synthetic oil goes in it, unless it is a higher quality such as Mobil 1, Redline or Royal Purple. A list of higher quality oils can be found on www.rx7club.com. And no, don't use any of the 'consumer-grade' synthetics like Valvoline or Castrol. And follow the reccomended fuel grade to the letter, no skimping.

Last, after warming it up 15 minutes (mandatory on EVERY cold begin, no exceptions), take it to redline at least once a week. This will keep the engine clean inside and the warmup period will prevent it from flooding and putting excess wear on the rotors and housings.

As with any other car, higher mileage doesn't necessarily mean a bad thing, how the vehicle was taken care of is what counts. I bought my 1987 RX7 with 91,000 miles on it and it runs like a new car, despite being 21 years old. My grandpa also had a 1974 RX4 (also with the 13B in it), purchased it new and just recently sold it with 375,000 miles on it, original engine and manual transmission, no rebuilds. Sure, the bodywork was quite rusty, but the drivetrain was rock-solid, and ran like brand new. All he ever did to it was let it warm up, check the fluids, top off as necessary and replace the clutch at 200,000. When cared for properly, a rotary engine will last a VERY long time because there are so few moving parts.

The gas mileage isn't too great, around 18 city / 28 highway. With a gentle right foot, you can scrape out as much as 25-26mpg in town. As for performance, it does well and will meet your expectations for it, but is more sedate than its predecessors. I test drove one and it felt OK, but wasn't impressed. It felt a bit 'floaty', compared to my FC.
