My car started up fine and I got fuel, then on the fwy, about 20 miles, the engine lost power. I had to exit, the engine sputtering. I turned it off and check fuel filter, its ok, not clogged. Then didnt start back up. How can I check the Fuel Injector pump, 82 240D?

Answer:
first to answer your question just crack open any one infector line and spin engine over with the starter [you should see a spurt of diesel fuel out of the open line once every second.

crankshaft revolution

second to get your car going again [please no smoking, use a shielded drop lamp, jack and bolck carefully and have a container available large enough to hold the contents of your fuel tank. DUE TO POSSIBLE FUEL SPILLAGE THIS MUST BE DONE OUTSIDE. OR LEFT TO A PROFESSIONAL SHOP.

1 raise and block rear of car

2 place suitable container under fuel tank area [even with rear axel-shaft right side]

3 you will disconnect the fuel hose from the steel line and drain the tank [this may take a long time or fuel may not even come out]

4 with tank drained [if it will] remove hose from tank bung.

5 now remove tank bung [if i remember right it requires the use of a 36mm socket]

6 most likely at this point fuel will be pouring out like there will be no tommorow don't loose the o ring .

7 now clean the black ooze coating the bung screen with spray carberator cleaner get this completely clean[protect o ring from cleaner spray]

8 now reassemble and lower car

9 replace fuel pre filter at primer pump [inspect hoses for cracks and replace as required] and replace main fuel filter.

10 operate primer pump200 strokes minimum [these often fail at current ages]

they just unscrew from transfer pump [with a copper sealing ring] ring somtimes sticks to transfer pump, new primer pumps come with a new copper ring.

11 now crack all 4 of the lines open at the injectors and operate starter until fuel is visible welling/spraying at each injector

12 now tighten the injector lines [15-20 Ft.Lbs.] and cer should now start []use a biocide additive to your fuel tank]

Answer:
well the easiest way is toopen your door and turn your key to the run position (not to start but to run) and listen to see if you can hear the pump kick on if it does then you probably have a different problem if it doesn't then it needs changed.

Answer:
Hoba is right.Check that screen. Run biodiesel to clean things up,no more than B20 unless you have viton hoses.

However you can blow back thru fuel line with air to clear screen for awhile. One guy swears by switching fuel lines( thats line coming in and going back).
