im about to buy a eclipse but i deff want to race frome time to time.

Answer:
Even though the eclipse isn't the best platform for racing (unless your doing drag racing or highway racing, then it doesn't matter so much), the ideal one would probably be the first gen (or 1g) eclipse since, usually, the first generation is the lightest. You can still swap in the 4g63t(the GS-T, GSX, or EVO engine) if you purchase a naturally aspirated eclipse(which is most likely SOHC anyway.), but if your want the AWD, you pretty much have to purchase it that way. If it turns out I'm wrong about weight, go for the second gen with the fixed headlights, it looks the best and is still available in GSX trim ;)

Answer:
Defninatly a 1G would be the better platform. With that stated, the GS-t/TSi/RS are FWD and will be quicker due to their decreased weight. A GSX/TSi AWD or RS AWD will give you way better traction off the line however they weigh more and you lose more power to the drivetrain. You can however convert them to RWD pretty easily. Join a forum and research it.

Answer:
eclipse is not so good in racing it sucks, for me i suggest Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX MR edition , it is much powerful than eclipse series

Answer:
The '99 Eclipse GS-T and GS-X are pretty fast. The GS-X is faster though.
