When accelerating rapidly it shifts hard. But only into 2nd gear. When acclelerating slowly or normally it shifts fine. Any ideas?
Answer:
When running properly the 2000 Maxima can even spin the front wheels going into second gear. I get to drive them after repairing the air flow meter and reprograming the ECM and most run well enough to chirp the tires into second gear at full throttle. You have a normal condition everything is OK. After we get them up to full power the customers come back and say I forgot how fast my Max was!
Answer:
Go to the dealer and find out if there were any ECU reprograms for the 2ed gear hard shift condition. It's fairly common for new vehicle models to have a few updates for minor things that need tweaking. Make sure your vehicle does not have any “open recalls” if you don't go to the dealer for regular maintenance.
I'd change the ATF every 60,000 miles making sure that only Nissan ATF was used. Other brands of ATF will cause shifting problems (usually hard shifts) or internal damage. As a rule I always use stock fluids, filters, and O2 sensors.
