OK thanks for looking basically my mpg is terrible im getting roughly 44 miles to ten pound driving as carefully as possible changing gears at about 2000 rpm to 3000 rpm. Ive checked the spark plugs and they all have carbon build up and i read in the haynes that this means the engine is running rich. Also the oil smells a bit like petrol when hot! is this right? I havent serviced the automobile yet but surely this wouldnt lead to this poor fuel consumption. Sometimes when i start the automobile it chuggs and the idle revs are about 1100rpm. I have a k & n induction. Decat and adjustable fuel pressure regulator. this isnt set up correctly as it doesnt have a pressure guage on it. Also the vehicle seems to be a bit jerky sometimes when i release the throttle. What things could possibly lead to these problems. i have checked for any visble leaks and i have found none, could this be something simple like the fuel filter or is it more serious like an internal leak. thanks and any help or comments at all would be greatfully apreciated

Answer:
Its normal for oil to smell like this in 4 stroke machines. Its continually lubricating the cylinders, etc. At the danger of sounding patronising have you checked your brakes? They might be binding or the handbrake sticking. Consumption should be around 45mpg for this model.

Answer:
this works out to nearly 20 mpg !!

1st , get a service , sounds like the oil is past it

2nd then see if it runs any better if not then get fuel system checked by tuning centre as might need cleaning and adjusting

Answer:
id try the air flow meter.if the engine doesnt know how much air its getting it will put in more fuel to compensate.hence the poor economy.

Answer:
Petrol in oil = head gasket.

Pop into local garage and ask for a fluid head gasket test. Most will do this free of charge in hope of getting the job.

Good luck!
