I'm looking to purchase a 206 and managed to find one for 2 grand but it has 80k on the clock. its a 2001 made automobile. I checked the service history and hasnt had much replaced, should i avoid it? it was a 1.4 petrol engine.and one previous owner who was a woman. any help/advice would be great thanks

Answer:
Everything JG has said is completely spot on.

At 80,000 miles it should have had the oil and filter replaced 6 or 8 times (depending if it is on 12,500 or 10,000 miles service intervals) the air filter, fuel filter and spark plugs should have been replaced twice, the timing belt should have been changed. If it hasn't then knock the price down by the amount it would cost for a garage to change the timing belt.

The brake fluid should also have been changed at least twice.

If these things haven’t been done then it is a sign of neglect on the part of previous owners and it will increase the chances of problems by a lot more than you would anticipate, plus it makes you wonder in what other ways the vehicle has been treated, improper servicing recommends owners that don't look after their automobile well and so might have driven it a lot harder than a careful owner.

The only other point i would add is that the 1.4 engine is the most problematic engine of the whole range, mainly due to its Sagem engine management system. I personally would always advocate the diesel, but if you want a petrol i would even suggest my own family to avoid the 1.4 like the plague!

The sort of common problems that occur on the 1.4 engine just don't seem to crop up the same on the 1.1 or 1.6 engines, and i have seen far more 1.4s with problems that are very difficult to track down.

Problems include air temp sensors, stepper motors, throttle potentiometers, ecus, ecu software bugs, injection relays and injectors (and these are the more common issues!)

Answer:
No, mileage is not really relevant, overall condition, how it runs & drives & it's maintenance history are more relevant.

It could have been driven by a nun for 80k miles, you could find one with half the miles on it, that had been driven by a boy racer every day - you'd never know!

The average UK mileage is taken to be around 12k a year, so a 2001 being 7 years old should have around 84k.
