Two 1965 Shelby Cobra 427(s) were made with the 427 cid Ford engines, the rest with the cheaper, slower 428 cid engines. Pontiac released 12 Factory 1963 Pontiac Tempest Lemans 421 Super Duty automobiles. What is faster, a 1965 Shelby Cobra 427, (with real 427 cid), or 1963 Pontiac Tempest Lemans 421 Super Duty in the 1/4 mile?

from what i have found the 1965 cobra ran the 1/4 in the 10.00. and the tempest in 9.90. so based off of that the tempest was faster in the 1/4. But not by much. Still not bad for a tiny pontiac. Now on a road coarse or just flat out for top end the cobra would take it. But you asked for 1/4 mile times. most of the people who answered your question probabally have no idea what a SD tempest was or that fact that in the early 60's pontiac was ahead of the game when it came to factory performance (ie factory cast aluminum headers). just check some of the old stats from the drags and nascar.

The 1965 Pontiac Catalina 2 2 with the 421 SD, 4-speed, aluminum front end and swiss cheese frame was, for YEARS, the fastest car ever tested by Automobile and Driver from 0-60, at 3.9 seconds. That mark has only been beaten in the last 10 or so years.
This car would run in the 11's, if memory serves, from the factory.
The Cobra back then ran in the 12's, and about 4.5-4.6 from 0-60.
Cobra was faster from 0-11-0, but in the 1/4 it gets spanked by the Catalina.
