when i put the key in the ignition and attempt to begin it it does nothing, it turns all the way but does not respond at all. when i turn it all the way i can hear a noise come from somewhere around my glove box (i'm assuming that's the “black box” or whatever) but anyway, the security light flashes and won’t grant me to start the automobile. i had this problem once before but all i did was take the key out and wipe it off on my shirt put it back in and it worked.. which was months ago. the other day it did it again only this time wiping off the key didn’t work. i also tried to use a can of compressed air to blow out the ignition and this did not work either. i dont have any money to take it to a dealership and have it diagnosed. what can i do to narrow down what the problem could be or is and how to fix it?

Answer:
You can remove your steering column cover with 3 hidden bolts underneath, and separate the two parts, pulling out the tilt wheel lever first, and the keys too. Check and see if the two-wire hookup, or plug-in is together, coming from the ign. lock cylinder. If it is, unplug, clean and try again. If no results, you could remove the entire cylinder with the key in the on position, and poke a jeweller's srewdriver into the release catch at the back, facing the firewall, moving the screwdriver toward yourself. Slide the cylinder out, there should be no resistance all, and see if all internal parts are intact, where there’s a magnetic metal cover over the tumblers, and it “swipes” the very special and one-of-a-kind electronic chip for your automobile alone, which is in there as well - the black plastic thing about half an inch long. If parts are broken, get a new cylinder, with keys, and have dealer program the new chip in the new unit, for about $30. However the assembly/cylinder is over $200, and used ones don't work.

I believe your security system is called the VATS system. There are two small wires attached to your ignition lock cylinder. I will just bet one or both of those wires is/are broken. If they are, you will need a new ignition lock cylinder. The key blank comes precut to the already coded cylinder. You will have to have a new key made from blank. The dealership parts folks have a VATS Interrogator. This tool will grant your original key pellet resistance to be read so they can make you a new key. You can buy an aftermarket manual to aid you with the installation of your new lock cylinder. No programming is necessary. This job is not an overly difficult one. Take your time.Hope this helps. I forgot to tell you, you might only need to replace your key. The dealership parts folks will read the key code for you to cut a new key. Sorry I did not give you the simplest information.DUUUH!
