My husband recently purchased a 2001 Porsche Boxster S and the airbag light is wanting to stay on. To be honest I hate to take it to a dealer beacause I know it will cost. Any suggestions???
Answer:
Disconnect the negative battery terminal, then quickly tap it against the positive side. Wait fifteen minutes and connect it again. If the light comes back on, you probably have a problem, a $50 hand held scanner can check to see what the trouble code is, and will make figuring out what the problem actually is far easier. Someone you know might have one already, borrow theirs, it'll be far less expensive.
I had the same thing on my WRX Limited, and it turns out that the reason that the light was on was because of a sensor that detected whether the light was shut off or not. Both air bags would have retained full functionality, but of course it won't pass inspection like that. I took it back to the dealership and they replaced it on waranty.

If you aren't mechanically inclined or don't want to risk damaging it further, your best bet is to take it to the dealer for an evaluation. You don't have to have them fix it, but they can tell you quickly why the light is on. Most dealers will not charge you for something this simple and you can decide at that point if it's something you would like to pursue or not.
There are also issues with 996 airbag lights that are caused by a faulty wire in the harness. This doesn't mean the airbag will not work, it just means the light displays.
To be safe, I would have the dealer test it for you.
