Hello - I was out driving my 1979 last night at pretty high speeds in the city - accelerating quickly and taking sharp turns and suddenly there was a bad burning smell and the vehicle wouldn’t accelerate any more - what did i do to my poor baby? Luckily i was just around the corner from my house and was able to push her home. The engine remained on but just revved when i pushed on the gas and it wouldn't accelerate there was also some smoke at one point - any ideas?? Clutch? Transmission? what could it be??
Answer:
You fried your clutch my friend. It has all the symptoms. A burning clutch is probably the worst smell a vehicle can make. It also makes plenty of smoke. I saw a video on YouTube where some idiot in a Camaro tried to do a burnout. He thought he was roasting the rears, but in reality, all the smoke was from his clutch. Needless to say, he destroyed his clutch. Also, without the clutch, no power can be transferred from the engine to the wheels, which explains why your engine continued to run. Not to worry, a new clutch for your 928 will only set you back about $1500 plus labor, and I say that with no sarcasm. If it was your timing belt instead of your clutch, you would be looking at $3000 to replace each piston (8), valve (16), and several other components, depending on the engine speed.
Answer:
I can tell you right now that your clutch is fried. You were putting much stress on the 29 year old clutch and it just started to slip. 928s have either a double or triple plate clutches, I'm not sure. I’ve heard from other 928 owners that a new clutch is one of the most expensive parts on the vehicle. Sorry to tell you the bad news, mate.
Answer:
I would check the engine oil first. The clutch would have felt different if it got fried, you would certainly feel it. The smell would be metallic, like hot brakes. Begin out checking all your fluids, certainly before you try starting the vehicle again. Best of luck!
Answer:
I believe your clutch disc is degenerated to dust and fragments. Not a cheap replacement either. Just the Parts for the clutch are $800 and then you will need the flywheel surfaced and hope that it has enough material on it to do this. Then there’s the labor???
Answer:
Burning Smell, No Acceleration = FRIED CLUTCH.
