I’ve a ’97 Suzuki Katana 600. On occasion, when I am idling, the engine will cut out, as will the neutral and oil lights. To start it back up, I hop off the bike, take off the seat and jiggle the battery wires around. The neutral and oil lights come back on and I am able to restart the bike. Other times, I turn the key to the “on” position, and try to start the bike and the battery seems suddenly loose its connection, as the lights go off again. As before, I have to jiggle the wires around to restart the bike. I know that it’s probably a bad connection, but why would it loose the connection so suddenly, and why doesn’t this happen when I’m moving?

Answer:
could possibly be corrosion on the contacts to the battery. remove from the battery and thoroughly clean with a wire brush or light sand paper both the cable connection and the battery terminal. there is also some spray on stuff to help prevent corrosion from re-occuring as frequently that can be purchased at any auto parts store or Walmarts.

the reason you probably don't notice it while riding is the engine running at higher speeds doesn't rely on the battery to continue running, it runs off a generator/alternator and is merely charging the battery…

Answer:
pmk is correct and that is the most likely cause…

FYI, when the engine is running, it is NOT pulling more current from the battery … the battery is being charged with a small amount of current being used the higher the RPM…

Answer:
when you are moving the bike is pulling more current from the battery, so it is “holding on” to the terminals better. that is why it doesn't happen when riding.
